Awesome question! Autism is still very much a mystery to many scientists. As far as we know now, it seems to be a disorder that starts when babies are still developing in the womb. So it doesn’t seem possible to get autism late in life, although it’s possible that a person waits until they’re older before they receive a diagnosis.
I have a collaboration with a lab at Yale Medical center that we are trying to get funded, studying gene expression in the placenta. We think there are some candidates genes expressed in the placenta that might explain the sex-bias in autism.
