Melissa Wilson Sayres answered on 27 Apr 2016:
There was never anyone that specifically convinced me to be a scientist, I always liked science. But there were many people who encouraged me and supported me as I continued down the path to becoming a scientist, and that has made a tremendous difference. I would not be a scientist without the encouragement of others and the perseverance to stick with it.

I agree with Melissa! There wasn’t one person that convinced me to be a scientist, but encouragement and support helped a lot.

I agree! Melissa put it so well- All of the teachers that encouraged me to keep studying, applying, and following my dreams made my path to becoming a scientist possible.

Melissa definitely answered this question perfectly. I’m going to answer it a little differently, though.
Like the others, no single teacher told me I should be a scientist. But goodness, there were many, many people (some of them were teachers) who told me *not* to be a scientist. One teacher said that I was the worst student he had ever seen!
Now that I spend my days doing science, it is very easy to look back and say that my teacher was wrong. But there are still days when I wonder if he was right. If you are passionate and curious and willing to work hard, then you have all the makings of an excellent scientist. While many scientists made good grades in school and were good in science classes, not everyone fits that model. In fact, the best scientists I know are *not* the smartest people I know. It’s about hard work and careful thinking, rather than ability to make good grades on a test.
I’ll borrow a phrase from the movie Ratatouille: Not everyone can be a great scientist. But a great scientist can come from anywhere!

A lot of my professors in college convinced me to pursue science. I liked their passion and how science made me think about a lot of tough issues. My teachers in elementary school did prepare me to be a scientist; they helped me get the necessary skills for the job.
