I like that science is a process: it’s a way to ask questions and get answers about whatever you want to know. It’s really cool when you realize that there is a ton of stuff we (as humans) just don’t know about. I used to think that everything was in a book somewhere and I would just have to read and listen to other people to learn everything. It was really inspiring and motivating to find out that we still don’t know so much about so many things, and that we need people to use science to solve a lot of problems.

I like how science challenges me, and the excitement of thinking about large issues. I like talking out solutions with my coworkers. But the part I like the most is that I am not always correct. Some times the answer I thought I might get was wrong, but that gives me more time to think about it. There is so much we do not know about the world, we need people to help us learn about it. I wanted to be one of these people.

What do I like about science? What an interesting question. For me, science is not some hidden, secret process that only a handful of hyper-smart people get to know about. Science is just a refined ability to do what we do in our lives every day.

And I think that’s what I like about science. Everyone can do science! Science is for everyone! You don’t need to have access to expensive equipment or know complicated math to do science. You just need to ask questions, and then find good ways to answer those questions. If you can do this in a careful, thoughtful manner, you’re doing science. It’s so easy for literally anyone to learn and discover something new, just because they’re asking a question no one has asked before, or they’re answering a question in a creative way. As a scientist, I get to push back the bounds of the unknown. And as a student, you can too.

I love the science is like a puzzle. Each experiment lets us see a piece of the puzzle and to put together the whole picture we have to take that information to make more experiments and see more pieces. Its always a challenging and can be very surprising. I like surprises 🙂
