Anesthesiologists are the doctors that put people to sleep and keep them safe during operations but we always meet them before they go to the operating room and 95% of the time they are awake when we meet them.

For research that is in new patients I always talk to people to see if they want to be in my study while they’re awake. It wouldn’t be fair to study them if they didn’t want you to- you have to get their consent. The data I use is mainly gathered from questions I ask them on paper while they’re awake. Some data like someone’s heart rate and other medical details of their surgery can be recorded while their asleep but only in patients that gave us the OK ahead of time.
