Stephanie Moon answered on 25 Apr 2016:
I don’t do animal work, I stick with cells. There are officials at the university that make sure animals are treated properly during research though to minimize harm.

Kevin Baker answered on 25 Apr 2016:
Same as Stephanie, if I use mice, there is a veterinary staff that ensures the safety and proper treatment of any animals used in experiments. It is illegal to harm an animal for no reason and without proper procedure.

Kellie Jaremko answered on 25 Apr 2016:
I do not currently work with animals. When I did and if I do in the future, like Kevin, we work with a veterinary staff to limit the amount of pain and suffering any animals experience. We also limit the number of animals used to the minimum amount needed to answer a given research question, as well as seek out alternatives if we can. All experimental animals are raised for this in a lab and are well cared for before, during and throughout any study.

Melissa Wilson Sayres answered on 26 Apr 2016:
I usually work on computers and don’t have interactions with animals. We are starting some projects where we are analyzing DNA from different reptiles. To get the DNA, we have a protocol approved to collect blood samples, if the animals are coming in to the veterinarian for another reason (so as not to stress the animals), and will only collect a small sample that will not harm the animal.
