Hi Brayden,
I think the biggest project I’ve worked on was when I was trying to figure out if a piece of the Dengue virus and West Nile virus could block up a protein that we have in our human cells. I worked on it as a research project for almost five years. One thing about it that made it a big project was that I got to work with a lot of other scientists from around the world- scientists in Australia, Japan, other states in the US and even other universities and labs at the same school in Colorado where I worked. It was really cool to work with so many people to try to solve the same problem, and we ended up learning more about how Dengue and West Nile virus and other related viruses (like Zika and Yellow Fever virus) make us sick.

The biggest project I worked on involved the human intestines. They are HUGE! We were looking to see if we could get a good bacteria to live in your gut. This good bacteria would grow and push out the bad bacteria. This project had a lot of different things going on and a ton of people were working on it. It was for a class and it was so much fun.
During my PhD, my current project is the largest I have worked on and I am no where close to being done!

There’s a machine shop in the basement of the building that I work in! They build custom machines and help customize scientific equipment for experiments. Many of us use machines all the time for our biology experiments. For example, there are robots that can process thousands of samples at a time so we can screen a ton of chemicals at once for drug discovery. I use machines that have precisely controlled temperatures for amplifying DNA to detect it in a sample, and also complicated microscopes that have different color lasers in them and are manipulated with a joystick.

Hi Awsomeness 115,
I know a couple of people that work with machinery and electronics- mostly they are physicists that work on biological problems and build microscopes or measure electricity in biological systems (like nerve cells). But mostly the people I work with are molecular biologists that are trying to figure out how normal and diseased cells work.
