  I’d use the money for a 3D model for outreach. My work is computational, and $500 wouldn’t even buy me a new node on the high performance computing (HPC) cluster (they’re $1000 apiece).
  
  But, I rarely have tangible things to show people, because we do analysis of DNA sequences. Also, Gila monsters are protected and cannot be readily transported places.
  
  So, a 3D model will allow me to have something to take around to show people what we’re working on, including its inner anatomy.

  I hadn’t considered using 3D models for my outreach, but Melissa’s answer is far more interesting, thoughtful, and creative than anything I could have devised.
