I grew up on a farm in East Texas, a part of the US that didn’t always think a lot about becoming scientists. The people there are more concerned with taking care of their families, keeping the cows and crops safe, and the oil flowing. These are all great things to dedicate your life toward doing, but usually that didn’t leave time for a lot of science.
So sadly, no. I’m the only scientist from among the friends I had as a kid. However, that just goes to show you that a scientist can come from absolutely anywhere!

Yes! I know people from middle school and high school that have gone into science as a career- either as research assistants, public health professionals, or engineers.

I know a few people that I grew up with that became doctors or nurses. Only one of my close friends from childhood became a scientist. It is really cool to talk about the science we each do and compare lab life. Someday we hope to work together on a project!

I don’t know many people I grew up with who are scientists – a lot went into careers related to medicine, but not scientific research.
