Yeah I would say I’m determined to work hard in my research- and I’m determined to be a scientist. It can be discouraging to do science, because so many things fail (experiments don’t always turn out the way you think they will) and there is a lot of uncertainty to deal with. So being determined helps me stay motivated.
If I won, I would use the cash to host a science and art fair where people that do scientific research and artists at the university I work at can use art to communicate about science to the public. I want to have kids in the town I live in come check out all of the cool science going on at the university and learn about it through art. For example, some friends and I talked to high school kids about the CRISPR/Cas9 system and they did a play to learn about it (you can read about it here: http://teensciencecafe.org/cool-cafes/hijacking-natures-machinery/). I think art and science are connected in a lot of ways. If I lost, I would just be happy that I got the chance to talk to you guys!! It’s been really fun.
