I find it fascinating that there is so much variation in the human genome, and especially on the sex chromosomes. We first find what is typical (that females have two X chromosomes and males have an X and a Y chromosome), and then we discover all the wonderful and unique ways that there are exceptions to this! For example, about 1/2500 people have a single X chromosome and about 1/1000 to 1/500 have two X chromosomes and a Y chromosome. There are also people with other atypical combinations of sex chromosomes, and I’m working to understand that variation and what its consequences are for human health.
